About Counterpoint

Counterpoint is a profeminist non-profit organization that provides counselling and educational services to assaulted women and abusive men. Counterpoint provides programs for abusive men, the majority of whom are referred through the criminal justice system. The Counterpoint women’s program provides services to partners of men who come to the men’s program including supportive counselling, support groups, educational workshops and referrals. Services are offered in English and Spanish and cultural interpreters and Sign Language interpreters are used when other language services are required.

Counterpoint provides education and public speaking as well as training for service providers in working with abusive men. Counterpoint conducts research in this area and works in partnership with many community based organizations in the field of violence against women. Counterpoint is part of a co-ordinated community response to abused women and is one of the agencies on the roster of the Woman Abuse Council of Toronto’s Partner Assault Response programs.

            Counterpoint is a non-profit Co-operative and was incorporated in 1997. It is based in Toronto and is accountable to it’s Board of Directors which is drawn from it’s membership base. 

 

Counterpoint mission and mandate

Counterpoint provides educational programming to perpetrators of violence in domestic relationships, and supports survivors of these relationships and others impacted by the violence. Counterpoint also contributes to community development efforts that promote ending domestic violence and the safety of individuals in these relationships.

 

The Counterpoint Co-operative

Counterpoint was founded by a group of nine women and men in 1995 and incorporated in 1997 as a Not-for-Profit Co-operative. The Co-operative is governed by the Co-operatives Act and the Not-For-Profit Corporations Act. It works within the parameters of  legislation that cover the work of non-profit organizations. It has a Board of Directors drawn from and accountable to its membership base. The Board of Directors is a working Board which is responsible for the organization in it’s entirety. The Co-operative’s day-to-day operations are overseen by a team of men and women with different areas of responsibility.The organization does not have a charitable number at this time.

Funding sources : Counterpoint’s work in the PAR program is funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General. Counterpoint also raises it’s own funds through client fees, project grants for special projects and it’s own fundraising efforts.
